Quick answer
- An SEO audit diagnoses crawling, indexing, content, structure and authority problems, then ranks fixes by impact.
- We need read-only access to Google Search Console and analytics, plus permission to crawl the site.
- You receive a prioritised report, a fix list with owners, and a walkthrough call, not a raw tool export.
- Use the audit when you are unsure what is wrong, before a redesign, or after traffic changes.
What a website SEO audit is, and what it is not
A website SEO audit is a structured investigation into why a site is or is not earning organic visibility. It is not a printout from an automated tool. Software can list thousands of warnings, but only a person who understands your business can tell which five of them are costing you enquiries. As an SEO audit consultant, our job is to separate signal from noise and show the evidence behind each recommendation.
Our SEO audit services cover three layers. The technical layer asks whether search engines can reach, render and index your pages. The content layer asks whether each page satisfies a real search task better than competing pages. The authority layer asks whether your site is trusted and referenced by others in your market. Weakness in any layer can cap performance, so a proper audit examines all three before recommending where to start.
What our SEO audit checks
Every audit begins with the same evidence base, then goes deeper where the data points. The table summarises the main areas and the questions each one answers.
| Area | What we check | Question answered |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling and indexing | robots rules, sitemaps, canonicals, status codes, index coverage | Can Google find and keep the right pages? |
| Rendering and speed | JavaScript rendering, Core Web Vitals, mobile usability | Is the page fast and fully visible to bots and people? |
| Site structure | URL logic, internal links, orphan pages, depth | Is authority flowing to commercial pages? |
| Content and intent | query-to-page mapping, thin and duplicate pages, cannibalisation | Does each page match one clear search task? |
| On-page signals | titles, headings, entities, structured data | Is the topic unambiguous to search engines? |
| Authority and local | backlink profile, brand mentions, Google Business Profile | Is the business trusted and visible locally? |
| Measurement | GA4 events, Search Console set-up, conversion tracking | Can you prove what SEO delivers? |
What access we need from you
To audit a site properly we need read-only access to Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4, plus permission to crawl the website. If you have server log files or a staging environment, they help, but they are optional. We never need to edit your site during an audit, and we never ask for admin passwords to your hosting or CMS.
If you have an existing Google Business Profile, we ask for manager-level read access so the local layer can be reviewed accurately. Where you work with an agency or developer, we are happy to coordinate directly so the audit does not slow your team down.

How findings are prioritised
A long list of problems helps nobody. We score each finding on three things: the likely commercial impact if it is fixed, the effort and risk of fixing it, and how confident we are in the diagnosis. The result is a ranked list in which the first items are usually quick, low-risk changes with a clear upside, followed by larger projects with a business case attached.
Findings are grouped into fix now, plan next and monitor. That grouping lets your team start work the same week, rather than waiting for a six-month roadmap. We also flag anything that looks risky to change, for example redirects or template edits, so it is reviewed before it ships.
What you receive at the end
The audit is delivered as documents and a conversation, so decisions can be made quickly.
- A written report in plain English with screenshots and evidence for each finding
- A spreadsheet fix list with priority, owner, effort and expected impact
- A shortlist of quick wins your team can ship immediately
- A recommended 90-day plan, linked to SEO strategy and roadmap consulting if you want one
- A walkthrough call to answer questions and agree next steps
Audit, technical SEO consulting or both?
The two services overlap but have different jobs. The audit diagnoses broadly across technical, content and authority areas and ends with a plan. Technical SEO consulting is hands-on implementation support: working with developers to resolve crawling, indexing, rendering and performance problems over a longer period. Many clients commission the audit first and then move into technical or content work once priorities are clear.
Choosing an SEO audit company or agency
If you are comparing an SEO audit agency, a freelancer and an SEO audit company, look past the price to the depth and the handover. Many SEO audits are automated reports with a logo on the front. A useful SEO auditing process combines tool data with human review, and it ends with a plan your team can act on. Ask whether the website SEO audit services you are considering include a walkthrough call, a ranked fix list and access to the person who wrote the findings.
We designed our SEO auditing services around those tests. Regular SEO audits also matter after the first one, which is why we recommend a repeat review each year, or after any major change to the site.
When to commission an SEO audit
The best moments are before a redesign, when you can still avoid mistakes cheaply; after a traffic drop, when you need a cause rather than a guess; when you take over a site or change provider; and once a year as routine maintenance for sites that depend on organic leads. If you only want to self-check first, our SEO audit checklist shows the basics. When you want a second pair of expert eyes, the audit is the efficient next step.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an SEO audit take?
Most audits take between one and three weeks depending on site size and complexity. Larger ecommerce or multi-language sites take longer. We confirm the timeline when we scope the work.
What is the difference between an SEO audit and an SEO audit tool report?
A tool report lists issues automatically without judging which matter. Our audit interprets the data in the context of your business, discards false alarms and ranks the real problems by impact.
Do you provide SEO audit services for small websites?
Yes. The scope scales to the site. A small business site gets a focused review of the pages and queries that matter most, which keeps the cost proportionate.
Will you fix the issues you find?
The audit delivers the diagnosis and plan. We can then guide implementation through our technical SEO and content strategy services, or hand tickets to your developers or agency.
How often should I audit my website?
A full audit once a year suits most business sites, with lighter checks after major releases, migrations or sudden traffic changes.
